I've decided to get serious about portfolio building. I have hired Kim with Madi Lu Designs to design my logo and marketing kit. I have my business license and privilege use license. I really want to start portfolio building, but I'm not exactly sure how to do it. I thought about free sessions but I want to make sure that when I'm ready to start charging I wont loose my clientele.

Any suggestions on how to get started portfolio building or if you want to share your experiences that will be great too. :)

Thanks

Hi I'm just starting out also and struggling with this issue too. At this point I am having a "grand opening special" for three months and charging 1/2 price this gets some pictures for my portfolio but also lets them know what the full price will be. As a further incentive areas I want to build a portfolio in such as maternity I'm doing at an even lower price, once again on a limited time offer and a restricted number of people. Hope this helps. Great idea, Sarah! You could also offer gift certificates for a certain amount off a session with you. Possibly even have a giveaway for a gift certificate for a free session if you're wanting to build your portfolio in a particular area. This way, clients will know it's a one-time thing and not expect the lower price from you in the future.
