Grab your mosquito repellent… we’re heading to the wetlands of Northern Idaho! This beautiful little boardwalk trail is found just outside of Couer d’Alene, situated next to the Spokane River. It’s a peaceful hike where I found a patch of sweet little wildflowers to photograph. We were lucky enough to capture this adventure when the water was high, making the vegetation beautifully lush. Check it out…

Featured Photos:

I fell in love with this scene as soon as I saw this patch of pretty little purple wildflowers backdropped by the lush greenery behind them. In order to give focus to the foreground flowers, I used a shallow depth, leaving a hint of color painting the background.

I used various Photo Veils from the Simplicity, Botanical and Illumination Collections. Below, you’ll see the before photo with some foundation editing in Camera Raw, and the after photo includes the addition of Photo Veils. Slide the slider to the left to reveal the entire edited photo.

The Rule of Thirds, anyone? Haha! This next photo I wanted to highlight the beautiful lush greenery of the grasses that surrounded these little blooms. I did this using both shallow Depth of Field and the Rule of Thirds. The negative space this created gave me the perfect canvas to add an ethereal touch using Photo Veils from the  Simplicity and Illumination Collections. Check out the before (with foundation edits) and after photos below…

This last photo is one of my all-time favorites! I drew focus to that center bloom by blurring out those blooms closer to my camera, using the large aperture of f/1.4. This is one of the reasons I absolutely love this 50mm lens for my flower photography. There are so many ways you can use shallow depth-of-field to create artful looks to your photographs. Add a Photo Veil or two (Botanical and Illumination Collections) and you’ve got the makings of a magical photo! Check out the difference between the before (with foundation edits) and after images…
