It was a sunny fall afternoon when Steve told me he had found the perfect scene for me to capture for my Idaho—A Moment in Time project. This one encompasses the entire idea of what I’m working towards—capturing Idaho as it is now, documenting the old and the new. This scene has both, with the modern structure looming over the historic home as if to say, “Your days are numbered.”

Sitting in the midst of modern progress in downtown Boise, sits a home that was built in 1900. Not the 1900s, but the year 1900. Can you imagine what this home has seen in its 122 years of life? The year this home was built, Idaho had just become a state ten years earlier!

I needed to photograph this historic home. This is surely not going to exist forever.

It makes me wonder why this home is still standing? With so much modern progress happening all around it, who’s caring for it now? What stories can I find? I intend to research more and will fill you in as I uncover its history. But for now, let’s enjoy the artistic aspect of photographing this idea of survival of the fittest

This was a fun collection of photos to put together, although you may have noticed they look a little different than the photos I typically like to shoot…

The Making of a Collection

It’s a stark scene. Ominous. There are many things at play in these photographs. Contrast can be found in the colors (blue and orange), the architecture (modern vs. historic), and light and shadow. The lack of lush vegetation, beautiful clouds, and the absence of life—all of these add to the stark emptiness of the story being told. The story of The Will to Survive.

What’s Up Next?

It’s been an unusually busy few months for me. I had the opportunity to show my work at an art exhibit hosted by the Alexa Rose Foundation in late November. The same foundation that awarded me the grant that would make this project possible. To say I was honored would be an understatement. This has truly been a once in a lifetime opportunity and I have cherished every moment.

That’s not to say I haven’t been busy working on Photo Adventures as well. In fact, Steve and I filmed two adventures taking advantage of the beautiful fall color we enjoyed around Boise. So stay tuned, those are in the queue and will be coming in the next few weeks.
