Ever been stuck in the doldrums of winter? Yeah, me too! This year it’s been especially tough because, here in Idaho, we’ve had an unseasonably cold start to the spring season. Every bud, bulb, and sprout has been delayed. It’s been so bad that daffodils, which usually bloom in March, had only begun blooming the last part of April!

As you can imagine, for the last few months, I have been completely uninspired to get outside and photograph anything. That is, until now… because yes, spring has finally arrived! You know what that means… Photo Adventure time! That’s right, join me on a walk through the city in springtime and let’s shake off this winter dust!

These photos feature Veils and Textures from the Botanical, Illumination, and the Olde World Collections. I often select just a few veils and/or textures in order to keep a consistent look for a collection of photos.

This first series of three photos were taken around a historic church in downtown Boise by the State Capitol. I was drawn to the bright vibrant wood gothic arch doorway and the sweet little tree filled with beautiful pink blossoms.

This sweet little vine caught my eye. I love the contrast between rough stone and delicate life.

This quickly became one of my favorite shots from the adventure! Again, I was drawn to the contrast between natural beauty and that beauty created by man. Also, in this current political climate, there’s something about this photo that fills me with hope.

Next, we ventured across the street to the Carnegie Library where we were met with a much different atmosphere… that of neglect and loneliness. In this next series of three photos, I wanted to capture the contrast between elegant traditional architecture and the result of the ravages of time.

This was a fun photograph to put together. I captured two separate exposures; one for the exterior of the window, and the second for the inside woodwork. I took each exposure into Photoshop and manually blended the two together to create this peek into the past.

As I mention in the video, I came back a few days later to capture this photo. The position of the sun on the day of filming was creating a challenge, so I opted for a better sky. One that was more overcast, adding to the melancholy mood I wanted to capture.

Boise has its fair share of modern structures as well, and continues to add more as the years pass. This is a well-known building, aptly-named The Hall of Mirrors. I love the simplicity here.

Next, we move on to the historic county courthouse, inspired by ancient Egyptian Architecture in the Art Deco style. This is truly a unique structure, and one I hope remains for years to come.

Lastly, in our collection of city architecture, is the State Capitol building. I love how the formation of clouds feel like it’s framing the building, adding to its grand stature.

A photo adventure featuring city architecture wouldn’t be complete without an overall shot showing the beautiful Boise cityscape. I found the perfect opportunity to practice the focus stacking technique, and I love how it adds depth to this image!

What a surprise! After photographing the previous cityscape, I turned around to see this gorgeous vista behind me. I couldn’t contain my excitement! This is why I live where I live!
