Take a break from the “busy-ness” of the day and explore a little lakeside town with me where it feels like taking a step back in time… we’ll find unique architecture, beautiful landscapes, vintage wooden boats (one of my very favorite photography subjects), and a little history, too!

There’s a place I love to go in Northern Idaho where I find a community that feels like going home. I grew up in a small town in Oregon where you knew your neighbors, you were greeted with smiles, and the pace of life was slower. Bayview, Idaho is such a place. There aren’t too many places left where you see people casually chatting on sidewalks visiting with neighbors. It seems like in today’s world, we’re either busy with our phones or hurrying here and there to our next errand. In Bayview, it’s easy to put those things away for a while and enjoy the “floating way of life!”

First up in our line-up of featured photos is this one I captured at the scenic overlook prior to arriving in Bayview. I was drawn to the evergreen trees lining the edge of the overlook with the mountains in the distance partially hidden by the haze of the smoke from a nearby wildfire. The clouds in the sky looked particularly beautiful and I wanted to capture them before more smoke moved in over the lake.

I used Photo Veils from the Botanical and Illumination Collections in editing the photos featured in this video. Check out the before and after photos below (before photos include foundation edits, after photos show the addition of Photo Veils).

The reason for our trip to Bayview… the floating house! Not wanting to imitate a previous capture I took of this structure, I found a unique composition seen through blurred greenery using a favorite technique… shallow depth-of-field.

Behind me as I captured the floating house were these historic limekilns. As the area was booming in the late 1800s to early 1900s, the demand for concrete increased which meant more demand for lime. These kilns were used in the production of lime for many years.

This was a beautiful custom-made coffee bar built by Thomas Tetrault, a local resident of Bayview. The skill and craftsmanship that went into building this is impressive to say the least.

One of my favorite things to photograph whenever I’m in a lakside town is the marina. There are just so many interesting shapes and colors. I enjoy finding interesting compositions.

A composition that I always love capturing when photographing boats is towards the bow. There’s beauty in the symmetry of the v-shape as the boat disappears beneath the surface of the water.

The first thing that struck me as I turned the corner was the emerald green of the water. I found that the water complimented the green paint along the bottom of the boat. As someone who isn’t familiar with everything involved with boat-life, it was so interesting to see all the ropes and rigging required to secure the craft in its slip.

I’m drawn to the craftsmanship of these vintage wooden boats. My Dad is a master craftsman and I’ve come to appreciate the beauty in hand-crafted wooden pieces of art such as this.
