The Soda Springs Geyser is known as the only captive geyser in the world. It also has a pretty cool history, where in 1937, local businessmen set out to find hot water for a commercial swimming pool and health resort, but accidentally created a geyser shooting hot water 70 feet out of the ground instead!
Today, the Soda Springs Geyser is set on a timer to go off every hour on the hour and is quite the sight to see, roaring “like a mad dragon,” as described by one of the developers back in 1937. I can’t wait to start photographing it, so let’s go!

The following series of photos are varying compositions from the same angle. I wanted to capture the power of this incredible geyser, so I chose a fast shutter speed in order to freeze the bursts of water. I love how no two photos are alike, and isn’t it a little serendipitous that the shape of the water mirrors the shape of the clouds. That’s so fun!
I also kept my processing quite simple, just bringing out the complimentary orange and blues, giving them a bit of saturation.
The following photos feature Photo Veils from the Botanical and Illumination Collections. Check out the before and after photos below (before photos include foundation edits, after photos show the addition of Photo Veils).

After shooting from the previous angle for a bit, I quickly popped around to the other side to shoot the geyser towards the sun and it created this beautiful ethereal glow! Right after firing off this shot, the geyser dwindled and I took the opportunity to walk around the park and see what other photos there were waiting for me to capture!

I was drawn to the vibrant green color at the bottom of the stream slicing through the vivid orange mineral-covered earth.

The different textures drew me into this composition. I decided to punch up the vibrant orange in my processing, still keeping it quite clean and crisp.
