“Road Closed”… an adventurer’s nightmare! What will Steve and I do when the only road to our ideal location to photograph an historic powerhouse is impassable? Do the barbed wire, chain link fence, and padlock spell “game over,” or do we find a way to continue our photo adventure and come away with the perfect shot? Hint, hint, we may just incorporate some drone photography into our photo shoot!
Join us as we explore American Falls on the majestic Snake River, and help us count how many fish decide to make an appearance. Along the way we’ll learn why this charming little town in Southeastern Idaho has such a colorful history.

I took this first photo with my Nikon D850. We noticed that the dock a little ways down the river was empty so we popped down there real quick before it filled up with fisherman. I fired off a few shots, and while it wasn’t my favorite composition with the industrial backdrop (I wanted to isolate the building a bit more), I do quite like how this one turned out.
The following photos feature Photo Veils from the Botanical and Illumination Collections.

Next, we have my drone photography! I was able to accomplish my goal of isolating the building much better with the drone. It allowed me to “walk” around the powerhouse, setting up the perfect composition. And… I love how these turned out! They tell a story of the past. A time slipping away… forgotten…
This first image is one of my favorites from the shoot. I love the melding of the natural elements and the industrial engineering. There’s just something so compelling about this stone-built powerhouse rising up out of the rugged rock outcropping. Beauty exists is in this image, despite the evidence of decay.

This composition is another favorite and wouldn’t have been possible without my flying camera! The diagonal elements of the dark river, the bright white minerals covering the stones, and the neutral middle ground of the architecture slicing through the center of the image create an overall balance that makes this image work.

The sun-flare makes this photograph! It’s as if the sun is setting over this historic structure both literally and figuratively.
