Follow me on a peaceful walk through a beautiful Japanese Friendship Garden located in Idaho Falls. We’ll discover winding pathways through lovely greenery and gentle cascading streams of water flowing through rugged rock formations. Listen closely to the sounds of water and songbirds, and let the serenity of this garden melt the day away!

When I set out to photograph this garden, my main goal was to capture the serenity you feel as you walk along the many different pathways through cascading water features and pleasing cultivations. I saw this sweet little cascade of water, framed with these bright green grassy croppings, and I knew that I’d found my first composition! In post-processing, I enhanced the light and shadows to draw the eye through the photograph.
The following photos feature Photo Veils from the Botanical and Illumination Collections. Check out the before and after photos below (before photos include foundation edits, after photos show the addition of Photo Veils).

Secluded back away from the main pathway, I discovered this scene. I was drawn in by the magical effect created by the tiny golden leaves surrounding the pool.

Gardens like this are a good place for reflection. I could sit by this tranquil scene for hours, getting lost in thought.

Nature is full of all different kinds of shapes and textures. What drew me into this scene was the contrast between the elegant edges of the fern leaf against the dark rugged backdrop of the rocks surrounding it.

Throughout this adventure, I was practicing the focus-stacking technique. It’s a new-to-me technique and, since purchasing the D850, I’ve been wanting to master the automatic settings in-camera and in Photoshop. Once I reviewed these last images on my computer, I realized I had missed focus quite a bit. No matter which image I looked at, the large rock to the left was out of focus. I love this composition though, with the lines of flowing water winding their way through the scene, and the rough rocks framing out the composition. I didn’t want to just scrap it. So I turned to AI. With a few tweaks in Photoshop, this photograph turned out to be one of my very favorites from the adventure!
